# Testing App Clips

> Open an iOS App Clip with a URL, the way a QR code or NFC tag would, and test it on cloud simulators.

An App Clip is a small part of your iOS app that people open from a QR code, an NFC tag, or a link, without installing the full app. Autosana opens your App Clip with a URL the same way a scan does, then tests it like any other app.

<Info>
  App Clips work on **iOS cloud simulators** only. Real devices, local runs from the CLI, and Android are not supported.
</Info>

## Upload your build

Either upload works:

| Upload | What it is |
| - | - |
| Your full app | The simulator build of your app. Xcode puts the App Clip inside it, in `YourApp.app/AppClips/`. Autosana installs the App Clip the first time a test opens it. |
| The App Clip on its own | The App Clip's `.app` (its `Info.plist` contains `NSAppClip`), built for the simulator and zipped like any other `.app`. |

Build either one with the steps in [Building Your Mobile App for Our Cloud](/app-build-guide).

## Open the App Clip in a test

Write a step with the URL that your QR code or NFC tag contains:

```text theme={null}
Open the App Clip at https://example.com/e/abc123
Verify the page shows the event details
```

Before this step, the test starts in the app you uploaded, like any other test: your full app, or your App Clip without a URL. The App Clip then receives the URL as if someone scanned it. A test can open more than one URL, one step each.

## After the App Clip opens

* Closing and reopening the app act on the App Clip. If the App Clip was closed, reopening it opens it again with the most recent URL.
* Logs and performance data come from the App Clip.
* When the test ends, Autosana closes the App Clip. The next test starts in the app you uploaded.
* App Clip data stays between the tests of one suite run, like your app's data.
* In a [multi-device test](/multi-device-testing) on iOS simulators, each device opens its own App Clip.

You can't switch back to the full app in the middle of a test.

## Errors

| Message | What to do |
| - | - |
| App Clips are supported on iOS cloud simulators only | Run the test on an iOS simulator. |
| This build doesn't include an App Clip | Upload a build whose `.app` contains an `AppClips/` folder, or upload the App Clip itself. |
| This build includes more than one App Clip | An app can contain one App Clip. Check the build's `AppClips/` folder. |
| The app isn't installed on the simulator | Run the test again. If it happens again, contact support. |
| Couldn't open the App Clip: iOS doesn't know this App Clip | Check that the URL matches the App Clip and that the App Clip is in the uploaded build. |
| Couldn't open the App Clip: iOS blocked the request | Contact support. |
| Couldn't open the App Clip: the device was busy | Run the test again. |
| Couldn't open the App Clip: the device host was unreachable | Run the test again. |
| App Clip support is unavailable on this host | Contact support. |
| Couldn't open the App Clip: *any other reason* | iOS refused to open the App Clip. Check the URL and that the App Clip is built for the simulator. If the reason mentions the device host, run the test again. |
